Mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing led the team that cracked the enemy secret code system known as Enigma. Turing helped develop what would become modern computing after the war. Despite his contributions to the Allied victory and computer development, Turing was tried and convicted for being homosexual, a crime in England in the 1950's. His work defeated fascists, but homophobia defeated this technology rock star.
